VETERINARY TECHNICIAN – Reading, PA

THE ROLE

Look no further!  We are looking for a Veterinary Technician for Humane Pennsylvania’s Humane Veterinary Hospitals (HVH), as well as for the programs, services, and clinics under HVH direction.  As we continue expanding our services for pets and the people who love them, we want to hear from you – as long as you are either a Certified Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Technician with at least two years of Veterinary Hospital, Shelter Medicine, or High Volume Spay/ Neuter experience. The key responsibilities of a Veterinary Technician include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure a high level of animal welfare and work to improve their quality of life.
  • Administering medicines and monitoring animals under anesthesia and recovering from surgery.
  • Caring for pets while educating pet owners.

THE PERSON

The key skills and qualities of a Veterinary Technician:

  • A desire to make a fundamental positive difference in the lives of animals and people through veterinary medical practice
  • Experience with animal restraint, venipuncture, and medication administration is required
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and as a team, have a friendly personality, and superior animal care skills
  • Empathetic communication skills and a love of animals and the human animal bond
  • CVT license in Pennsylvania, or at least two years of Veterinary Hospital, Shelter Medicine, or High Volume Spay/ Neuter experience is preferred.
  • Additional skills such as surgical prep, anesthesia induction, recovering and monitoring, dental prophy and dental radiography skills are preferred
  • Spanish-speaking is a highly desirable.

VETERINARY ASSISTANT – Reading, PA

THE ROLE

As a Veterinary Assistant, your role encompasses several key aspects of our hospital, including animal care and treatment, customer service, and maintaining hospital cleanliness. By assisting the technicians and doctors, we can maintain the high standard of care for our patients and clients.

The duties and responsibilities of a Veterinary Assistant include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Animal Care and Treatment Responsibilities
    • Animal restraint; assisting in x-ray, maintaining safety protocols when handling animals; always maintaining a high standard of patient care; and assisting the technicians and doctors in any way asked to do so.
  • Hospital Cleanliness Responsibilities
    • vacuuming; mopping; changing garbage; dusting; cleaning and stocking exam rooms after appointments; following daily, weekly and monthly task lists; cleaning and sterilization of surgical equipment; wrapping surgical packs and running autoclave, cleaning surgery table and trays; cleaning and maintaining all sinks and bathrooms; laundry; kennel/ cage cleaning;  maintaining proper dilutions for cleaning solutions; maintaining stock of cleaning supplies; cleaning windows and doors; replenishing supplies (including paper towels, garbage bags,); cleaning kitchen/break area; knowledge of patient isolation protocols; and overall simple maintenance of the sights, smells and sounds of the hospital.
  • Emergency Situations
    • During an emergency situation, the veterinary assistant’s job may be the “Fetch” person (including grabbing needed supplies as directed, as quickly as possible). This requires a strong knowledge of where important supplies are located throughout the hospital, as well as the ability to respond calmly and quickly, especially with clients.

Physical Requirements: The ability to lift objects or pets of at least 30lbs; the ability to control large, anxious, or angry pets; the ability to stand/ walk, bend, and stoop for up to 10 hours per day with adequate breaks.

Working Conditions: Prolonged exposure to various aqueous solutions, including but not limited to dish soap, chlorhexidine, and other cleaning agents. Prolonged exposure to isopropanol, hydrogen peroxide. Potential exposure to formalin solution. Potential/prolonged exposure to isoflurane gas. Prolonged exposure to quaternary ammonium cleaners and bleach. Prolonged exposure to pressurized steam. Potential exposure to sharps, including needles and surgical blades. Potential exposure to radiation-producing machines. Prolonged exposure to animal hair and dander. Potential exposure to aggressive or unvaccinated animals.
